Chapter 16
Setting: This chapter takes place in the forest.
Significant events: Hester waits in the forest for Dimmesdale to show up, because she is planning on telling him about Chillingworth. While waiting Pearl asks more questions, some even about the "Black Man". When Dimmesdale gets there she asks Hester if that's the "Black Man". Pearl asks if the Black Man left a mark on his chest too.
Characterization: Pearl knows a lot is asking a ton of questions being a curious little girl. She knows way more than any girl her age.
Conflict: Hester and Dimmesdale's secret isn't really a secret anymore with Pearl. Pearl pretty much knows everything now.
Symbols: I say the symbols for this chapter are the "Black Man", the scarlet letter, and the fact that Dimmesdale always holds his heart.
Tone: The tone would be curiosity and suspense.
Mysteries: How is Dimmesdale gonna react? Do you think he already knows?
Say what?: “Mother,” said little Pearl, “the sunshine does not love you. It runs away and hides itself, because it is afraid of something on your bosom. . . . It will not flee from me; for I wear nothing on my bosom yet!” In this quote Pearl is talking to Hester, and she says that the sun runs from Hester but not her because she has not sinned and isn't wearing anything on her bosom.

Chapter 17
Setting: This chapter is still taking place in the forest
Significant Events: Hester comes clean about Chillingworth. Dimmesdale is not too happy about it at first and blames her for everything. She starts hugging him and comforting him and he ends up forgiving her.
Characterization: Everyone is starting to come clean and deal with everything going on
Conflict: Dimmesdale was mad and upset at Hester at first, he was blaming her for everything; but then ends up forgiving her
Symbols: No new symbols
Tone: The tone started off angry but then got warmer as the chapter went on
Mysteries: What's next for Dimmesdale, Hester, and Pearl?
Say What?: " Thou hast long had such an enemy, and dwellest with him, under the same roof!" This is when Hester begins to tell Dimmesdale that Chillingworth is making him worse and he isn't a nice guy. Dimmesdale is confused at first.

Chapter 18
Setting: Forest
Significant Events: Hester and Dimmesdale are still talking about moving to Europe, and they are pretty happy about the idea. Hester rips off the A on her bosom and throws it. The sun then shined down on them
Characterization: Pearl, Hester, and Dimmesdale are more family like
Conflict: wasn't any real conflict in this chapter
Symbols: no new symbols, still the scarlet letter
Tone: Happiness, excitement, and for Pearl slightly confused
Mysteries: Whats Pearl going to say? Are they really gonna move to Europe? How they getting there? What's Chillingworth going to do and react?
Say what?: "The past is gone! Wherefore should we linger upon it now? See! With this symbol, I undo it all, and make it as it had never been!" This quote is when Hester is saying lets not look back, yet lets look forward. When she takes off the letter she can make it as as if it never happened.

Chapter 19
Setting: The setting is still in the forest
Significant Events: Hester calls Pearl back over to them but refused to come until Hester put her A back on. Once Hester did she ran over and hugged and kissed her. Pearl asked Dimmesdale if he would walk hand and hand with her back to town, and he said no and kissed her. Pearl was not happy with that answer and ran to the creek and attempted to wash it off.
Characterization: Pearl acts a little weird in this chapter because she seems like she wants them 3 to be a family but gets upset when Dimmesdale won't do it in front of everybody.
Conflict: Dimmesdale won't hold hands with them and walk back to town and Pearl isn't too happy about that.
Symbols: The scarlet letter played a big role in this chapter because Pearl wasn't happy when she took it off because the scarlet letter was like Pearl so why would she want to get rid of it.
Tone: demanding and still a bit curious
Mysteries: Whats next? Is Dimmesdale ever going to be public about them?
Say What?: “Will he go back with us, hand in hand, we three together, into the town?” Pearl once again asks if Dimmesdale will go in public again, but he still says no. This is significant because Pearl asks a lot, and makes her seem like shes interested and wants or just trying to start trouble.

Chapter 20
Setting: The setting is back in the town
Significant Events: Hester and Dimmesdale still plan to leave for Europe soon. They think it would be better for all three of them. On his way home he feels like saying little comments to people that are unnecessary Once he gets home he tells Chillingworth he doesn't need him anymore. He goes home and finds his sermon hes going to say when Election Day comes up.
Characterization: Dimmesdale and Hester seem happy to move out of town to Europe
Conflict: In this chapter it would probably be between the townspeople and Dimmesdale, and how they are looking at him and there reaction to what hes going to say when he leaves
Symbols: No new symbols were in this chapter
Tone: Happy, and like relaxed
Mysteries: Whats going to happen on Election Day? Hows the town going to react? Is Chillingworth still planning on doing anything?
Say What?: “I am not the man for whom you take me! I left him yonder in the forest,” This is what Dimmesdale says. He is saying take me for I am now and not what I was.
